Mountain Mornings with Todd Nixon

Missoula County Sheriff's Citizen's Academy

5 minutes | Wednesday, December 31, 2025

In this episode, we sit down with Lt. Robert Kennedy of the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office to talk about an exciting new opportunity for local residents: the first-ever Sheriff’s Citizen’s Academy.

The six-week program is designed to give community members a behind-the-scenes look at how the Sheriff’s Office operates—from patrol and investigations to K9 operations, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), detention services, and Search & Rescue. Participants will also take part in a special concluding session at the Missoula County Firearms Range.

Lt. Kennedy explains why the Sheriff’s Office created the Citizen’s Academy, what participants can expect during the course, and how programs like this help strengthen trust, transparency, and partnerships between law enforcement and the community. We also cover who’s eligible to apply, the time commitment involved, and why space is limited.

If you’ve ever been curious about how the Sheriff’s Office works—or you’re looking for a meaningful way to better understand public safety in Missoula County—this is a conversation you won’t want to miss.
